Free & Equal
Free & Equal is an unprecedented United Nations global public education campaign for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality. A project of the United Nations Human Rights Office, Free & Equal raises awareness of homophobic and transphobic violence and discrimination, and promotes greater respect for the rights of LGBT people everywhere. The campaign engages millions of people around the world in conversations to help promote the fair treatment of LGBT people and generate support for measures to protect their rights.
Free & Equal recently celebrated a year of campaigning, in which the campaign’s message of acceptance and equality reached more than a billion people. Watch the short video One Billion Rising to learn more about the campaign’s work and impact to date.
The United Nations Human Rights Office
The United Nations human rights office leads UN efforts to promote and protect human rights around the world. Headed by the High Commissioner for Human Rights – the UN’s most senior human rights official – the Office works to inform individuals of their human rights, identify and address human rights challenges, and assist governments, which are legally responsible for the protection of human rights, in fulfilling their human rights obligations. It also provides substantive and secretariat support to the inter-governmental Human Rights Council and to the committees and independent experts tasked with monitoring compliance with international human rights standards. A part of the United Nations Secretariat, the Office is supported by a multinational workforce of more than 1,100 staff based in Geneva, New York and field presences in almost 60 countries around the world.
