About us

3 de February, 2011

With our headquarters in Santiago, Chile, the Regional Office for South America of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) was inaugurated on 23 September, 2009. Our mission is to observe, promote and protect human rights in nine countries across the region: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Colombia is covered by an OHCHR Country Office. There is also a Regional Office for Central America, located in Panama. The Regional Office for South America coordinates its actions and activities with these bureaus, and others.

Regional Offices maintain constant dialogue with governments, the various powers of the State, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, civil society, national human rights institutions, as well as other United Nations agencies, so as to formulate and put into practice strategies, programmes and measures aimed at promoting and protecting all human rights in the countries of the region. We contribute to capacity-building among our partners, along international norms.
